It’s one of those weird “Only in New York” stories.

The trail that led James Guardino from the chaos of the holding cells in back of Brooklyn’s steamy NYPD central booking space in the 84^th Pct., to eventually making a 36-minute documentary about Island running hero Bill Welsh.

The tale goes something like this:

Guardino, of the Dongan Hills Guardinos, was home from Cal-Berkley after earning post-graduate degree in journalism.

“Dongan Hills native James Guardino was looking for gold, but he is quite happy to have won silver with his film documentary about Bill Welsh.

Guardino, a former track athlete and coach at both Monsignor Farrell and Wagner College, produced a 34-minute film about Welsh, the Sunnyside resident and legendary track and field coach and road-racing mainstay called “10 Gold Medals.””
